El ejército romano en la tardorrepública

Resumen: RESUMEN Cayo Mario fue un militar destacado en la historia de Roma: vencedor del rey númida Yugurta y de las tribus germanas de cimbrios, ambrones y teutones, él fue elegido siete veces cónsul y fue considerado el tercer fundador de la ciudad por detrás de Rómulo y de Marco Furio Camilo. Sin embargo, es más conocido por ser considerado como el gran reformador del ejército romano en el periodo republicano, al permitir el reclutamiento masivo de los más pobres y causando que los hombres más influyentes del momento, como Sila, Pompeyo o César, reclutasen ejércitos personales. El objetivo de este trabajo, con la ayuda de las fuentes antiguas y la historiografía moderna, es tratar de comprobar si Mario realizó una profunda reforma de la milicia con la abolición del sistema tradicional o si por el contrario esos cambios fueron menos importante y fueron pensados únicamente para mejorar las habilidades combativas de los ejércitos que el comandó contra las tribus germánicas y los númidas. ABSTRACT Gaius Marius was an outstanding military man in the history of Rome: winner of the Numidian king Jugurtha and the Germanic tribes of Cimbri, Ambrones and Teutones, he was elected consul seven times and was considered the third founder of the city after Romulus and Marcus Furius Camillus. Nevertheless, he is known as the biggest reformer of the Roman army in the republican period, when he allowed the massive recruitment of the poorest and causing that the most influential men of that time, such as Sulla, Pompey or Caesar, recruited personal armies. The objective of this work, with the aid of the ancient sources and the modern historiography, is trying to verify if Marius made a deep reform of the militia with the abolition of the traditional system or, on the contrary, if those changes were less important and were thought just for improving the combat skills of the armies that he commanded against Germanic tribes and Numidian king.
