Resumen: Cette étude s’intéresse à la mode du voyage en Espagne pendant la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle. La lecture du succès éditorial Terre d’Espagne créé par René Bazin en 1895 met en évidence les relations franco-espagnoles fréquentes au cours du XIXe siècle, ainsi qu’une reconsidération de l’altérité littéraire à travers son récit. Terre d’Espagne fut une œuvre célèbre en France, nous éloignant des récits romantiques stéréotypés. Il existe également un autre écrit issu d’un deuxième voyage en 1924, à l’occasion d’un hommage à Maurice Barrès à Tolède. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un auteur très conservateur et oublié de l’Histoire littéraire, son ouvrage souleva plusieurs commentaires parmi les intellectuels espagnols contemporains. Ainsi, nous analyserons également les relations que Bazin établit avec les secteurs les plus conservateurs, qui nous renvoient une image de l’Espagne cherchée par l’auteur français à travers ces écrits.
This article deals with the ongoing French interest to travel in to Spain during the second half of the 19 th century. It focuses on the reading of Rene Bazin’s travel narrative Terre d’Espagne published in 1895 as proof of the continuous relationships between France and Spain. Importantly, it reveals a reading of literary otherness. Terre d’Espagne was a well-known text in France but one which moved away from romantic and stereotyped narratives. Not only did Bazin publish that travel narrative, but he also wrote an article after his visit to Toledo in 1924 to attend Maurice Barrès’s tribute. Nowadays forgotten by the literary history –partly because he was a catholic author– his book, nonetheless, aroused considerable interest among the Spanish literati of the time. Bazin’s relationship with the conservative classes of the country is also discussed, particularly as it refers to the image of Spain sought by the French author through his texts.
