note = "Abstract Roman religion is articulated around the cultus
deorum, and as long as the community's relationship with
the gods remained in balance, the gods would be favourable
to Rome. The cosmic order is represented by the pax deorum
and its rupture is produced through impiety. Violence is an
impure act in itself, and Rome's religious response to war
or religious punishments shows that it is closely related
to the cosmic balance, necessitating rituals of
purification to restore order. In this paper I intend to
analyse violence in relation to religion in the Late
Republican period (133 30 BC), which corresponds to a
period of progressive manifestation of internal violence in
Rome, full of episodes that pushed the balance of the civic
community with the gods to the limit. We will go through a
selection of cases of religious violence with the aim of
approaching episodes and the religious justification of
                       violence.",
