Abstract: The Albufera de València, a coastal lagoon sited 10 km south of the city of València, has been a key element for several civilizations that have settled in the region. The dynamics of the lagoon have drastically changed from the large saline coastal lagoon that one day the inhabitants of the Al-Andalus city of Balansiya could admire to the current state of ecological degradation. In order to improve the knowledge about the spatial and temporal evolution of the Albufera during historical times, we have recovered and studied 8 short sediment cores from several locations in the lagoon. Here we present a paleolimnological study based on multiproxy analyses, including sedimentological descriptions, smear slide optical microscope and scanning electron microscope observations, elemental chemical analyses (X-Ray Fluorescence and ICP-OES), stable isotopes in organic matter (d13CPDB and d15NAIR), chlorophyll a and pheophytin quantification and 14C dating.
