Its diagnosis and monitoring are based on the use of methodologies for measuring the severity and extent of these spots, and this includes a large subjective component. For this reason, this paper presents an automatic method for characterizing psoriasis images that is divided into four parts: image preparation or pre-processing, feature extraction, classification of the lesions, and the obtaining of parameters. The methodology proposed in this work covers different digital-image processing techniques, namely, marker-based image delimitation, hair removal, nipple detection, lesion contour detection, areal-measurement-based lesion classification, as well as lesion characterization by means of red and white intensity. The results obtained were also endorsed by a professional dermatologist. This methodology provides professionals with a common software tool for monitoring the different existing typologies, which proved satisfactory in the cases analyzed for a set of 20 images corresponding to different types of lesions. 000110763 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/T31-20R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO-FEDER/TIN2016-76770-R 000110763 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000110763 590__ $$a2.592$$b2021 000110763 592__ $$a0.538$$b2021 000110763 594__ $$a2.9$$b2021 000110763 591__ $$aMATHEMATICS$$b21 / 333 = 0.063$$c2021$$dQ1$$eT1 000110763 593__ $$aComputer Science (miscellaneous)$$c2021$$dQ2 000110763 593__ $$aEngineering (miscellaneous)$$c2021$$dQ2 000110763 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000110763 700__ $$aSilva Piñeiro, A. 000110763 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-5254-1402$$aAlesanco, Á.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000110763 700__ $$aPérez-Rey, I. 000110763 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-9485-7678$$aGarcía, J.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000110763 7102_ $$15008$$2560$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
