A total of 11 car parts that contain valuable and scarce materials have been selected using thermodynamic rarity, an indicator that helps assess elements and minerals in exergy terms according to their relative scarcity in the crust and the energy required to extract and refine them. A recyclability analysis using a product-centric approach was then undertaken using dedicated software, HSC Chemistry. To that end, the dismantling of these car parts into three main fractions was performed. Each car part was divided into non-ferrous, steel, and aluminum flows. A general metallurgical process was developed and simulated for each flow, including all the required equipment to extract most of the minor but valuable metals. Of the 11 parts, only 7 have a recyclability potential higher than 85%. By treating these selected car parts appropriately, the raw materials’ value recovered from the car can increase by 6%. The approach used in this paper can help provide guidelines to improve the eco-design of cars and can also be applied to other sectors. Ultimately, this paper uniquely introduces simulation-based thermodynamic rarity analysis for thermodynamic based product “design for recycling”. 000121425 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/H2020/101003587/EU/leading the TRansion of the European Automotive SUpply chain towards a circulaR futurE/TREASURE$$9This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No H2020 101003587-TREASURE$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/PID2020-116851RB-I00 000121425 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000121425 590__ $$a3.3$$b2023 000121425 592__ $$a0.672$$b2023 000121425 591__ $$aENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES$$b159 / 358 = 0.444$$c2023$$dQ2$$eT2 000121425 591__ $$aENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES$$b66 / 182 = 0.363$$c2023$$dQ2$$eT2 000121425 591__ $$aGREEN & SUSTAINABLE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY$$b58 / 91 = 0.637$$c2023$$dQ3$$eT2 000121425 591__ $$aGREEN & SUSTAINABLE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY$$b58 / 91 = 0.637$$c2023$$dQ3$$eT2 000121425 593__ $$aGeography, Planning and Development$$c2023$$dQ1 000121425 593__ $$aEnvironmental Science (miscellaneous)$$c2023$$dQ2 000121425 593__ $$aComputer Networks and Communications$$c2023$$dQ2 000121425 593__ $$aRenewable Energy, Sustainability and the Environment$$c2023$$dQ2 000121425 593__ $$aHardware and Architecture$$c2023$$dQ2 000121425 593__ $$aManagement, Monitoring, Policy and Law$$c2023$$dQ2 000121425 593__ $$aEnergy Engineering and Power Technology$$c2023$$dQ2 000121425 594__ $$a6.8$$b2023 000121425 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000121425 700__ $$aAbadías, Alejandro 000121425 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-3330-1793$$aValero, Alicia$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000121425 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-9263-7321$$aCalvo, Guiomar$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000121425 700__ $$aReuter, Markus Andreas 000121425 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-6148-1253$$aOrtego, Abel 000121425 7102_ $$14013$$2205$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
