In this way we fill a gap in the literature and clarify some existing confusion about Feynman iϵ prescription for the propagator of the electromagnetic field. We also discuss the BRST quantization and investigate the apparent singularities present in the theory when the gauge parameter ξ takes the value −1. We find that this is a mere artifact due to the choice of basic modes and show that in the appropriate basis the commutation relations and the BRST transformation are, in fact, independent of the gauge parameter. The latter only appears as the coefficient of a BRST exact term in the Hamiltonian, which constitutes an extremely simple proof of the independence of any physical process on the gauge parameter ξ . 000123903 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA-FSE/E21-17R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO-FEDER/PGC2018-095328-B-I00 000123903 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000123903 590__ $$a1.5$$b2022 000123903 592__ $$a1.007$$b2022 000123903 591__ $$aPHYSICS, MATHEMATICAL$$b28 / 56 = 0.5$$c2022$$dQ2$$eT2 000123903 593__ $$aMathematical Physics$$c2022$$dQ1 000123903 591__ $$aPHYSICS, PARTICLES & FIELDS$$b21 / 29 = 0.724$$c2022$$dQ3$$eT3 000123903 593__ $$aStatistical and Nonlinear Physics$$c2022$$dQ1 000123903 591__ $$aPHYSICS, MULTIDISCIPLINARY$$b59 / 85 = 0.694$$c2022$$dQ3$$eT3 000123903 593__ $$aNuclear and High Energy Physics$$c2022$$dQ1 000123903 594__ $$a2.5$$b2022 000123903 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000123903 7102_ $$12004$$2405$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
