This article studies the effect of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) shock on the distribution of population, especially on cities. One of the main contributions of this study is that it underlines the importance of distinguishing between winning and losing sides, an aspect which until now has been largely overlooked. While previous research on war shocks has also tended to be concerned with inter-state wars, this paper concentrates on a civil war. We take advantage of a new, long-term, annual data set. Our results show that, overall, the Spanish Civil War did not have a significant effect on city growth. However, we also find a significant and negative effect in the growth of cities that aligned themselves with the losing side. These results are robust to heterogeneity in the effect of the war shock, measured as war severity and duration. Although short lived, the temporary effect on growth results in a permanent effect on the size of cities on the losing side. 000125991 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA-FEDER/S55-20R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/S39-20R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MCINN-FEDER/PGC2018-095529-B-I00$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MCINN/PGC2018-096640-B-I00$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MCINN/PID2021-123220NB-I00$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/ MICINN/ECO2017-82246-P$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/PID2020-114354RA-I00$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/UZ/UZ2020-SOC-05 000125991 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby-nc-nd$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/es/ 000125991 590__ $$a3.2$$b2023 000125991 592__ $$a1.026$$b2023 000125991 591__ $$aECONOMICS$$b108 / 600 = 0.18$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000125991 591__ $$aREGIONAL & URBAN PLANNING$$b14 / 54 = 0.259$$c2023$$dQ2$$eT1 000125991 591__ $$aENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES$$b68 / 182 = 0.374$$c2023$$dQ2$$eT2 000125991 593__ $$aDevelopment$$c2023$$dQ1 000125991 593__ $$aEnvironmental Science (miscellaneous)$$c2023$$dQ1 000125991 594__ $$a4.9$$b2023 000125991 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000125991 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-0716-4713$$aSilvestre, Javier$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000125991 7102_ $$14000$$2415$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
