Humans can become infected by ingesting meat infected with T. gondii, and the consumption of infected sheep and goat meat is a significant public health issue. Antibodies against T. gondii have been found in sheep in Spain, indicating the presence of the parasite in the country. However, no previous studies have assessed the presence of T. gondii in sheep meat in Spain. In view of the significance of the transmission of T. gondii through meat consumption and given the lack of previous studies in Spain, we carried out an investigation to evaluate the presence of T. gondii in adult sheep meat (mutton). A total of 216 muscle samples were analyzed by digestion, and a real-time PCR assay was used to determine the presence of T. gondii DNA. A total of 24.5% of the samples were found to be parasitized, indicating that the consumption of sheep meat can present an important risk for human health. 000127723 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/A05-17R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/A17-17R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/RTC-2017-6594-2 000127723 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000127723 592__ $$a0.795$$b2023 000127723 593__ $$aFood Science$$c2023$$dQ1 000127723 593__ $$aParasitology$$c2023$$dQ2 000127723 593__ $$aEpidemiology$$c2023$$dQ2 000127723 594__ $$a5.1$$b2023 000127723 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000127723 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-0797-1160$$aGarcía, Amalia Xía 000127723 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-2048-4749$$aCastillo, Juan Antonio$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000127723 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-7173-7216$$aBadiola, Juan José$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000127723 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-4121-8087$$aHalaihel, Nabil$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000127723 700__ $$aSerrano, María$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000127723 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-1417-272X$$aGracia, María Jesús$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000127723 7102_ $$11009$$2773$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
