The system itself is required to operate on demand typically in emergency situations. The purpose of inspection is to determine the functional state of the system and consequently whether the system requires replacement. The system state is modeled using the delay time concept in which the failed state is preceded by a defective state. Imperfect inspection is quantified by a set of probabilities that relate the system state to the outcome of the inspection. The paper studies the effect of these probabilities on the efficacy of inspection. The analysis indicates that preventive replacement mitigates low-quality inspection and that inspection is cost-effective provided the imperfect inspection probabilities are not too large. Some derivative policies in which replacement is "postponed" following a positive inspection are also studied. An isolation valve in a utility network motivates the modeling. 000129319 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/MTM2015-63978-P 000129319 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000129319 590__ $$a3.177$$b2019 000129319 591__ $$aCOMPUTER SCIENCE, HARDWARE & ARCHITECTURE$$b12 / 53 = 0.226$$c2019$$dQ1$$eT1 000129319 591__ $$aCOMPUTER SCIENCE, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING$$b17 / 107 = 0.159$$c2019$$dQ1$$eT1 000129319 591__ $$aENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC$$b81 / 265 = 0.306$$c2019$$dQ2$$eT1 000129319 592__ $$a1.099$$b2019 000129319 593__ $$aSafety, Risk, Reliability and Quality$$c2019$$dQ1 000129319 593__ $$aElectrical and Electronic Engineering$$c2019$$dQ1 000129319 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion 000129319 700__ $$aScarf, P.A. 000129319 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-8035-5762$$aBerrade, M.D.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000129319 7102_ $$12007$$2265$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
