000129482 5203_ $$aThis article examines the occupational mobility of rural migrants moving into a major urban centre, Madrid, in the 1950s. Employment type is used as a further indicator of the labour market position of migrants. A new longitudinal dataset has been derived from a survey done during that period, and quantitative and qualitative research approaches are combined to provide a better understanding of occupational trajectories. The results show the importance of accumulating human capital that is transferable to an urban labour market, and of minimizing the costs of migration and integration so as to achieve a higher occupational status. The results also reveal that, once in Madrid, the conditions of the poorer and less-skilled southern migrants tended to converge with those of their more skilled northern counterparts.
Este artículo examina la movilidad ocupacional de los emigrantes rurales en una gran ciudad, Madrid, durante la década de 1950. El tipo de empleo de los inmigrantes es utilizado como un indicador adicional del mayor o menor éxito en el mercado de trabajo. A partir de unos datos cualitativos de la época, se ha creado una nueva base de datos individual y longitudinal. En el artículo se combinan los enfoques cuantitativo y cualitativo, con la intención de comprender mejor la situación de los inmigrantes una vez en la ciudad. Los resultados muestran la importancia de acumular capital humano transferible a un mercado de trabajo urbano y de las estrategias dirigidas a reducir los costes del desplazamiento y la integración. Los resultados también sugieren que, una vez en la ciudad, la situación de los inmigrantes menos formados y provenientes de las provincias más pobres del sur del país tendió a converger con la de los inmigrantes más formados y provenientes del norte.
