This paper illustrates how preferences for convertibility, that is, for fixed exchange rates, were shared by the parliamentary representatives of its manufacturing provinces because of their dependency on imported inputs (coal and cotton). However, to explain their preference for currency stability, trade policy must be considered. Without the high tariffs that the cotton industry enjoyed thorough the whole period and the steel industry from 1891 onwards, the renouncement of a pro competitive depreciating peseta might not have been so clear-cut. Thus, beyond the Spanish case, this paper supports the theoretical assumption that the input-output structure of a productive sector influences its currency stance, while reinforcing the argument that trade policy plays a key role in the understanding of currency politics. 000129866 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/S44-20R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/AEI/PGC2018-094941 000129866 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000129866 590__ $$a0.2$$b2022 000129866 591__ $$aBUSINESS$$b153 / 154 = 0.994$$c2022$$dQ4$$eT3 000129866 591__ $$aHISTORY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES$$b32 / 34 = 0.941$$c2022$$dQ4$$eT3 000129866 591__ $$aHISTORY$$b87 / 100 = 0.87$$c2022$$dQ4$$eT3 000129866 591__ $$aECONOMICS$$b378 / 380 = 0.995$$c2022$$dQ4$$eT3 000129866 592__ $$a0.135$$b2022 000129866 593__ $$aHistory$$c2022$$dQ2 000129866 593__ $$aHistory and Philosophy of Science$$c2022$$dQ3 000129866 594__ $$a0.4$$b2022 000129866 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000129866 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-9076-3743$$aFillat, Carmen$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000129866 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-7303-3346$$aSerrano Sanz, Jose Maria$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000129866 7102_ $$14014$$2225$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
