Focusing on the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky model, we argue that the relevance of running effects for the axion couplings crucially depends on the scale where the heavier Higgs scalars are integrated out. We study the impact of these effects on astrophysical and cosmological bounds as well as on the sensitivity of helioscopes experiments such as IAXO and XENONnT, showing that they can be sizable even in the most conservative case in which the two Higgs doublets remain as light as the TeV scale. We provide simple analytical expressions that accurately fit the numerical solutions of the renormalization group equations as a function of the mass scale of the heavy scalars. 000129965 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/AEI/CEX2019-000918-M$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/AEI/PID2019-105614GB-C21$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EUR/COST/CA21106-COSMIC Wispers$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/H2020/788781/EU/Towards the detection of the axion with the International Axion Observatory/IAXOplus$$9This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No H2020 788781-IAXOplus$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/H2020/860881/EU/Revealing how hidden symmetries shape the universe/HIDDeN$$9This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No H2020 860881-HIDDeN$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/2017-SGR-929$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/2021-SGR-249 000129965 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000129965 590__ $$a4.6$$b2023 000129965 592__ $$a1.587$$b2023 000129965 591__ $$aPHYSICS, PARTICLES & FIELDS$$b7 / 31 = 0.226$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000129965 593__ $$aPhysics and Astronomy (miscellaneous)$$c2023$$dQ1 000129965 591__ $$aASTRONOMY & ASTROPHYSICS$$b17 / 84 = 0.202$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000129965 593__ $$aNuclear and High Energy Physics$$c2023$$dQ1 000129965 594__ $$a9.3$$b2023 000129965 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000129965 700__ $$aGiannotti, Maurizio$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000129965 700__ $$aMescia, Federico 000129965 700__ $$aNardi, Enrico 000129965 700__ $$aOkawa, Shohei 000129965 700__ $$aPiazza, Gioacchino 000129965 7102_ $$12004$$2038$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
