Our objective was to determine the effect of the ERAS elements on patient outcomes following elective bariatric surgery. Materials and Methods: Prospective cohort study in adult patients undergoing elective bariatric surgery. Each participating center selected a single 3-month data collection period between October 2019 and September 2020. We assessed the 24 individual components of the ERAS pathways in all patients. We used a multivariable and multilevel logistic regression model to adjust for baseline risk factors, ERAS elements, and center differences. Results: We included 1419 patients. One hundred and fourteen patients (8%) developed postoperative complications. There were no differences in the incidence of overall postoperative complications between the self-designated ERAS and non-ERAS groups (54 (8.7%) vs. 60 (7.6%); OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.73–1.79; P = .56), neither for moderate-to-severe complications, readmissions, re-interventions, mortality, or hospital stay (2 [IQR 2–3] vs. 3 [IQR 2–4] days, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.62–1.17; P = .33) Adherence to the ERAS elements in the highest adherence quartile (Q1) was greater than 72.2%, while in the lowest adherence quartile (Q4) it was less than 55%. Patients with the highest adherence rates had shorter hospital stay (2 [IQR 2–3] vs. 3 [IQR 2–4] days, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.09–2.17; P = .015), while there were no differences in the other outcomesConclusionsHigher adherence to ERAS Society® recommendations was associated with a shorter hospital stay without an increase in postoperative complications or readmissions. 000130504 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000130504 590__ $$a2.9$$b2022 000130504 591__ $$aSURGERY$$b63 / 213 = 0.296$$c2022$$dQ2$$eT1 000130504 592__ $$a1.127$$b2022 000130504 593__ $$aEndocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism$$c2022$$dQ1 000130504 593__ $$aSurgery$$c2022$$dQ1 000130504 593__ $$aNutrition and Dietetics$$c2022$$dQ1 000130504 594__ $$a5.8$$b2022 000130504 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion 000130504 700__ $$aSanchez-Santos, Raquel 000130504 700__ $$aAbad-Motos, Ane 000130504 700__ $$aGimeno-Moro, Ana M. 000130504 700__ $$aDiez-Remesal, Yolanda 000130504 700__ $$aJove-Albores, Patricia 000130504 700__ $$aArago-Chofre, Pablo 000130504 700__ $$aOrtiz-Sebastian, Sergio 000130504 700__ $$aSanchez-Martin, Ruben 000130504 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-7964-1166$$aRamirez-Rodriguez, Jose M.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000130504 700__ $$aTrullenque-Juan, Ramon 000130504 700__ $$aValenti-Azcarate, Victor 000130504 700__ $$aRamiro-Ruiz, Alvaro 000130504 700__ $$aCorrea-Chacon, Olga C. 000130504 700__ $$aBatalla, Astrid 000130504 700__ $$aGimeno-Grauwinkel, Cassandra 000130504 700__ $$aMarti Sanahuja-Blasco, Josep 000130504 700__ $$aGonzalez-Valverde, Francisco M. 000130504 700__ $$aGalan-Menendez, Patricia 000130504 700__ $$aDiez-Zapirain, Miren J. 000130504 700__ $$aVilallonga, Ramon 000130504 700__ $$aZorrilla-Vaca, Andres 000130504 700__ $$aPascual-Bellosta, Ana M. 000130504 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-2462-1904$$aMartinez-Ubieto, Javier$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000130504 700__ $$aCarrascosa-Miron, Teresa 000130504 700__ $$aRuiz-Escobar, Alicia 000130504 700__ $$aMartin-Garcia-Almenta, Ester 000130504 700__ $$aSuarez-de-la-Rica, Alejandro 000130504 700__ $$aBausili, Marc 000130504 700__ $$aPalacios-Cordoba, Angela 000130504 700__ $$aOlvera-Garcia, Maria M. 000130504 700__ $$aMeza-Vega, Julio A. 000130504 700__ $$aSanchez-Pernaute, Andres 000130504 700__ $$aAbad-Gurumeta, Alfredo 000130504 700__ $$aFerrando-Ortola, Carlos 000130504 700__ $$aMartin-Vaquerizo, Beatriz 000130504 700__ $$aTorres-Alfonso, Jose R. 000130504 700__ $$aAguado-Sanchez, Sandra 000130504 700__ $$aSanchez-Cabezudo-Noguera, Fatima 000130504 700__ $$aGarcia-Erce, Jose A. 000130504 700__ $$aAldecoa, Cesar 000130504 7102_ $$11013$$2090$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
