    <subfield code="a">Following the ban on the use of ZnO as growth promoter in the EU, the need to reduce the therapeutic use of antibiotics in animal feeding arises because of the potential development of microbial resistances. Silver nanoparticles (NanoAg, &lt;100 nm) may exert a strong antimicrobial effect, are resistant to gastric inactivation and have a low intestinal absorption rate. As a result, the potential risk of toxicity is reduced (Fondevila et al., 2009, Fondevila, 2010). The doses that promote physiological and productive effects in animals are low (from 20 to 40 ppm, Fondevila et al., 2009). It is hypothesised that an early removal of the additive, provided it maintains its zootechnical effect, might reduce the risk of metal retention in tissues at slaughter. The aim of the study was to confirm the growth-promoting effects of the use of NanoAg in broilers and to evaluate silver retention in target tissues of chickens (muscle and liver) depending on the time of offering.</subfield>
