The main hypothesis is that in these films Irishness conveys a duality: a studied dialogue between Americanness and Otherness. The hyphenated identity is approached through the study of masculinity, the importance of community, authenticity and through the analysis of its commodification. In the texts and the discourses they construct, Irishness evokes a certain detachment from the mainstream society, as well as a complex, stereotyped uniqueness—violent, unrefined and low-class. The study opens with an overview of the portrayal of Irishness and its relevance in American cultural and social spheres. It then goes on to examine the usage of Irishness in the gangster genre, placing a special emphasis on the view of the genre proposed by Robert Warshow in “The Gangster as Tragic Hero”. The second part of the dissertation consists of a more in-depth analysis of Irisnhess in The Departed, Scorsese’s most thorough take on the issue of Irisnhess so far. 000015536 521__ $$aGraduado en Estudios Ingleses 000015536 540__ $$aDerechos regulados por licencia Creative Commons 000015536 6531_ $$airish 000015536 6531_ $$airishness 000015536 6531_ $$acommodifying irishness 000015536 6531_ $$airish gangster 000015536 6531_ $$amartin scorsese 000015536 6531_ $$airishness in martin scorsese's films 000015536 6531_ $$acinema studies 000015536 6531_ $$airish-american gangster 000015536 6531_ $$athe departed 000015536 700__ $$aDeleyto Alcalá, Celestino$$edir. 000015536 7102_ $$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bFilología Inglesa y Alemana$$cFilología Inglesa 000015536 8560_ $$f634040@celes.unizar.es 000015536 8564_ $$s1853655$$uhttps://zaguan.unizar.es/record/15536/files/TAZ-TFG-2014-1216.pdf$$yMemoria (eng)$$zMemoria (eng) 000015536 909CO $$ooai:zaguan.unizar.es:15536$$pdriver$$ptrabajos-fin-grado 000015536 950__ $$a 000015536 980__ $$aTAZ$$bTFG$$cFFYL
