It is shown that a healthcare system can be constructed by different modules whose inputs and outputs are connected according to their geographical location. Each module can be modeled in two phases: (1) obtain the sequences of treatments and cares received by a patient in the case of a particular disease/condition, and (2) add the resources necessary to perform the previous sequences. The global model is obtained by fusion the inputs and outputs of the modules and by adding information on the patients. The constructed modules together with the resources are Petri nets belonging to a new subclass called healthcare Petri nets that is proved to have equivalent behavior with (Formula presented.) nets, a well-known class of Resource Allocation Systems. This allows us to apply the structural results already existing in the literature for (Formula presented.) to the context of healthcare systems. In order to illustrate the results, a case study of a public healthcare area in Zaragoza is considered as a use case. 000161018 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/CICYT-FEDER/DPI2014-57252-R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/CICYT-FEDER/TIN2013-40809-R$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/T27$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/DGA/T93 000161018 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000161018 590__ $$a2.519$$b2018 000161018 591__ $$aOPERATIONS RESEARCH & MANAGEMENT SCIENCE$$b27 / 84 = 0.321$$c2018$$dQ2$$eT1 000161018 591__ $$aENGINEERING, MANUFACTURING$$b22 / 49 = 0.449$$c2018$$dQ2$$eT2 000161018 592__ $$a1.326$$b2018 000161018 593__ $$aManagement Science and Operations Research$$c2018$$dQ1 000161018 593__ $$aIndustrial and Manufacturing Engineering$$c2018$$dQ1 000161018 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000161018 700__ $$0(orcid)0009-0008-2448-1271$$aMahulea, L. 000161018 700__ $$aGarcía Soriano, J.M. 000161018 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-5066-4030$$aColom, J.M.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000161018 7102_ $$15007$$2520$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
