000161854 5203_ $$aThe paper describes the synthesis process of Zr-based oxide and diboride solid solution. The (Zr0.97W0.03)O2 and (Zr0.94W0.06)O2 solid solution could be successfully synthesized by calcination of nitride solid solution. A method for obtaining a diboride solid solution by borothermal reduction of an oxide solid solution is shown. Keeping W content at the level of 3 at. % allowed to obtain a homogeneous solid solution of the (Zrx,Wy)B2. Increasing the amount of W up to 6 at. % led to the formation of WB precipitates in the synthesized product. High-resolution transmission microscopy confirmed the shift of {100} inter-planar distance from 0.353 nm for pure ZrB2 to 0.342 nm and 0.330 nm for (Zr0.97,W0.03)B2, and (Zr0.94,W0.06)B2 solid solution, respectively. The observed decrease in the interplanar distance is associated with the substitution of Zr with W in the crystal lattice of these materials. The growth mechanism of synthesized product could be ascribed as layer-by-layer growth controlled by grain boundary diffusion.
