This implies that there are differences between tissues in mitochondrial number, function, protein composition and morphology. The OXPHOS system biogenesis requires the coordinated expression of both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) expression can be regulated at different levels (replication, transcription, translation and post-translational levels) to contribute to the final observed OXPHOS activities. By analyzing five mammalian tissues, we evaluated the differences in the cellular amount of mtDNA and its correlation with the final observed mitochondrial activity. 000165209 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000165209 590__ $$a3.615$$b2011 000165209 591__ $$aGENETICS & HEREDITY$$b45 / 156 = 0.288$$c2011$$dQ2$$eT1 000165209 591__ $$aCELL BIOLOGY$$b78 / 179 = 0.436$$c2011$$dQ2$$eT2 000165209 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000165209 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-4931-6730$$aEnríquez, J.
