A los primeros intentos (Rosenkratz, Flögel), centrados en el análisis de la fealdad como respuesta a la hegemonía de lo bello, siguieron las propuestas de Bajtín y Kayser, centradas en periodos históricos concretos. Diversos trabajos de Beltrán Almería retoman el concepto y lo sitúan en un horizonte más amplio, como estética fundacional de la imaginación creadora humana en su despliegue por la historia. Este trabajo retoma dicha senda e intenta explorar su plasmación en los álbumes ilustrados infantiles. La imaginación del niño, proclive al grotesco, ofrece a los artistas conscientes de su poder, avalado por la gran tradición (Busch, Steig, Sendak, Saéz Castán…), un espacio de creación fecundo, que en las siguientes páginas se explora a través de figuras y símbolos como el niño endiablado, el apocalipsis, el monstruo o los estados de enajenación y tránsito. The study of the grotesque, as an aesthetic category, is one of the great contributions of modern thought in its approach to the artistic object. The first attempts (Rosenkratz, Flögel), centred on the analysis of ugliness as a response to the hegemony of the beautiful, were followed by the proposals of Bakhtin and Kayser, centred on specific historical periods. Various works by Beltrán Almería take up the concept and situate it in a broader horizon, as the foundational aesthetics of the human creative imagination in its unfolding through history. This work takes up this path again and attempts to explore its expression in children's picture books.
