Notas: In this study a biographical review was made regarding protein-losing enteropathy in dogs, their symptomatology, diagnostic testing and treatment used on these types of patients. The study focuses especially on the relationship that protein-losing enteropathy has with the appearance of pulmonary thromboembolism due to the enteric loss of Antithrombin III. Three clinical cases referred by the Veterinary Clinic Hospital of Zaragoza with protein-losing enteropathy symptomatology (chronic diarrhea, vomiting, progressive weight loss, and ascites) are described in detail, one of them with confirmed pulmonary thromboembolism in the postmortem examination. The blood samples of the three dogs showed the presence of hypoproteinemia and hypoalbumenemia. Lastly, a discussion is made of the three cases, based on the differential diagnoses of the symptomology that was manifested, the results of the diagnostic tests, and an examination of the errors in the diagnostic approach of each case, giving recommendations of clinical management of an animal with this symptomatology. An insistence is made of the need to carry out coagulation testing in the patients with protein-losing enteropathy due to their predisposition and risk of suffering pulmonary thromboembolism.
