The average friction force is significantly lowered in a frequency range determined by the "washboard" frequency of the stick-slip motion and the viscous damping accompanying the tip motion. An approximately linear relationship between the actuation amplitude and the effective corrugation of the surface potential is derived in the case of in-plane actuation, extending a similar conclusion for out-of-plane actuation. Temperature causes an additional friction reduction with a scaling relation in formal agreement with the predictions of reaction rate theory in the absence of contact vibrations. In this case the actuation effects can be described by the effective energy or, more accurately, by introducing an effective temperature. 000032473 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/FIS2011-25167$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/MAT2012-34487 000032473 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000032473 590__ $$a3.736$$b2014 000032473 591__ $$aPHYSICS, CONDENSED MATTER$$b14 / 66 = 0.212$$c2014$$dQ1$$eT1 000032473 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000032473 700__ $$aGnecco, E. 000032473 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-0698-6555$$aMazo, J.J.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000032473 7102_ $$12003$$2395$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDepartamento de Física de la Materia Condensada$$cFísica de la Materia Condensada 000032473 773__ $$g89 (2014), 075423 [7 pp.]$$pPhys.
