R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1954-55). Tolkien’s experiences as a lover of nature in a growing industrialized country are considered; however, taking into account his intentions as a writer based on the sense of applicability, or freedom for the reader to interpret the fantastic work in his/her own context, the book is analysed here from an ecocritical point of view, interpreting Middle-Earth as a civilization headed toward decay due to the uncontrolled industrialization and the subsequent devastation of the land. From this perspective, this paper draws parallels between the fantastic world of the author with our present day real context, establishing similarities between the two words in terms of sustainability, environment and the limitation of the resources of the Earth. Thus, comparing the environmental attitudes of the Hobbits, the Elves, the Ents and Tom Bombadil, in contrast with those of Saruman, Sauron, the Orcs, and Gollum, the reader is able to see the dangers of abusing and mistreating the natural world, which is one of the most serious and alarming issues of our society. 000047225 506__ $$aby-nc-sa$$bCreative Commons$$c3.0$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ 000047225 520__ $$aEste trabajo analiza los tipos de relaciones que se dan entre los personajes de El señor de los anillos, novela escrita por J. R. R. Tolkien (1954-55), y el medioambiente. Se consideran las experiencias de Tolkien como amante de la naturaleza en un país cada vez más industrializado; no obstante, teniendo en cuenta que su intención como escritor se basaba en la ‘aplicabilidad’, o la libertad del lector para interpretar las obras fantásticas en su propio contexto, se analiza la obra desde un punto de vista ecocrítico, interpretando la Tierra Media como una civilización abocada al fracaso debido a la industrialización descontrolada y la subsiguiente devastación de la tierra. Desde esta perspectiva, este trabajo dibuja paralelismos entre el mundo fantástico del autor y nuestro mundo real y presente, estableciendo similitudes entre los dos en términos de sostenibilidad, medioambiente y limitación de los recursos naturales.
