The aim of the study was to identify modifiable risk factors associated with the presence of prediabetes in men and women. Methods: Cohort Study in Primary Health Care on the Evolution of Patients with Prediabetes (PREDAPS-Study) is a prospective study on a cohort of 1184 subjects with prediabetes and another cohort of 838 subjects without glucose metabolism disorders. It is being conducted by 125 general practitioners in Spain. Data for this analysis were collected during the baseline stage in 2012. The modifiable risk factors included were: smoking habit, alcohol consumption, low physical activity, inadequate diet, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. To assess independent association between each factor and prediabetes, odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using logistic regression models. Results: Abdominal obesity, low plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol), and hypertension were independently associated with the presence of prediabetes in both men and women. After adjusting for all factors, the respective ORs (95% Confidence Intervals) were 1.98 (1.41-2.79), 1.88 (1.23-2.88) and 1.86 (1.39-2.51) for men, and 1.89 (1.36-2.62), 1.58 (1.12-2.23) and 1.44 (1.07-1.92) for women. Also, general obesity was a risk factor in both sexes but did not reach statistical significance among men, after adjusting for all factors. Risky alcohol consumption was a risk factor for prediabetes in men, OR 1.49 (1.00-2.24). Conclusions: Obesity, low HDL-cholesterol levels, and hypertension were modifiable risk factors independently related to the presence of prediabetes in both sexes. The magnitudes of the associations were stronger for men than women. Abdominal obesity in both men and women displayed the strongest association with prediabetes. The findings suggest that there are some differences between men and women, which should be taken into account when implementing specific recommendations to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes in adult population. 000048175 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000048175 590__ $$a1.641$$b2015 000048175 591__ $$aPRIMARY HEALTH CARE$$b7 / 20 = 0.35$$c2015$$dQ2$$eT2 000048175 591__ $$aMEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL$$b57 / 155 = 0.368$$c2015$$dQ2$$eT2 000048175 592__ $$a1.081$$b2015 000048175 593__ $$aFamily Practice$$c2015$$dQ1 000048175 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000048175 700__ $$aGiráldez-García, C. 000048175 700__ $$aCarrillo, L. 000048175 700__ $$aSerrano, R. 000048175 700__ $$aGarcía-Soidán, F.J. 000048175 700__ $$aArtola, S. 000048175 700__ $$aFranch, J. 000048175 700__ $$aDíez, J. 000048175 700__ $$aEzkurra, P. 000048175 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-3811-421X$$aMillaruelo, J.M.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000048175 700__ $$aSeguí, M. 000048175 700__ $$aSangrós, J. 000048175 700__ $$aMartínez-Candela, J. 000048175 700__ $$aMuñoz, P. 000048175 700__ $$aGoday, A. 000048175 700__ $$aRegidor, E. 000048175 700__ $$aAlonso, M. 000048175 700__ $$aÁlvarez, B. 000048175 700__ $$aÁlvarez, F. 000048175 700__ $$aÁlvarez, J.C. 000048175 700__ $$aAntón, J.J. 000048175 700__ $$aArmengol, O. 000048175 700__ $$aÁvila, L. 000048175 700__ $$aBabace, C. 000048175 700__ $$aBarutell, L. 000048175 700__ $$aBedoya, M.J. 000048175 700__ $$aBenito, B. 000048175 700__ $$aBilbeny, B. 000048175 700__ $$aBirules, M. 000048175 700__ $$aBlanco, C. 000048175 700__ $$aBobé, M.I. 000048175 700__ $$aBoente, C. 000048175 700__ $$aBorras, A. 000048175 700__ $$aBosch, R. 000048175 700__ $$aBrito, M.J. 000048175 700__ $$aBuil, P. 000048175 700__ $$aCabré, J.J. 000048175 700__ $$aCarbonell, F. 000048175 700__ $$aCarramiñana, F. 000048175 700__ $$aCasorrán, A. 000048175 700__ $$aColas, R. 000048175 700__ $$aCordero, B. 000048175 700__ $$aCos, X. 000048175 700__ $$aCuatrecasas, G. 000048175 700__ $$aDe Castro, C. 000048175 700__ $$aFlor, De La 000048175 700__ $$aSen, De La 000048175 700__ $$aDe Miguel, R.M. 000048175 700__ $$aDe Santiago, A.M. 000048175 700__ $$aDel Castillo, M. 000048175 700__ $$aDomínguez, D. 000048175 700__ $$aDurán, C. 000048175 700__ $$aFerreiro, M. 000048175 700__ $$aGamarra, J. 000048175 700__ $$aGarcía, F. 000048175 700__ $$aGarcía-Giralda, L. 000048175 700__ $$aGijón, M.T. 000048175 700__ $$aGómez, Á. 000048175 700__ $$aGómez, M.C. 000048175 700__ $$aGonzález, J.C. 000048175 700__ $$aGonzález, M. 000048175 700__ $$aGranero, E. 000048175 700__ $$aGutiérrez, A.T. 000048175 700__ $$aGutiérrez, F. 000048175 700__ $$aGutiérrez, L. 000048175 700__ $$aGutiérrez, M.A. 000048175 700__ $$aHernández, A.M. 000048175 700__ $$aIbáñez, M. 000048175 700__ $$aIglesias, R. 000048175 700__ $$aIgual, D. 000048175 700__ $$aJurado, A. 000048175 700__ $$aLlanes, R. 000048175 700__ $$aLópez, F. 000048175 700__ $$aLópez, R. 000048175 700__ $$aLorenzo, A. 000048175 700__ $$aLosada, C. 000048175 700__ $$aMacía, R. 000048175 700__ $$aMagallón, R. 000048175 700__ $$aMalo, F. 000048175 700__ $$aMancera, J. 000048175 700__ $$aMansilla, M.J. 000048175 700__ $$aMarín, M.T. 000048175 700__ $$aMartínez, F.J. 000048175 700__ $$aMartín, J.L. 000048175 700__ $$aMartínez, M.C. 000048175 700__ $$aMartínez, R. 000048175 700__ $$aMassana, A. 000048175 700__ $$aMata, M. 000048175 700__ $$aMayayo, M.S. 000048175 700__ $$aMediavilla, J.J. 000048175 700__ $$aMendo, L. 000048175 700__ $$aMonzón, A. 000048175 700__ $$aMoreno, A. 000048175 700__ $$aMundet, X. 000048175 700__ $$aMur, T. 000048175 700__ $$aNavarro, E. 000048175 700__ $$aNavarro, J. 000048175 700__ $$aNogales, P. 000048175 700__ $$aObaya, J.C. 000048175 700__ $$aOria, C. 000048175 700__ $$aOrtega, F.J. 000048175 700__ $$aPaniagua, F. 000048175 700__ $$aPardo, J.L. 000048175 700__ $$aPérez, F.C. 000048175 700__ $$aPérez, P.P. 000048175 700__ $$aPiulats, N. 000048175 700__ $$aPlana, R. 000048175 700__ $$aPorta, N. 000048175 700__ $$aPoveda, S. 000048175 700__ $$aPrieto, 000048175 7102_ $$11007$$2610$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
