Although the pathogenesis of PCME is not completely understood, the contribution of postsurgical inflammation is generally accepted. Consequently, anti-inflammatory medicines, including steroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, have been postulated as having a role in both the prophylaxis and treatment of PCME. However, the lack of a uniformly accepted PCME definition, conflicting data on some risk factors, and the scarcity of studies comparing the role of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to steroids in PCME prevention make the problem of PCME one of the puzzles of ophthalmology. This paper presents an updated review on the pathogenesis, risk factors, and use of anti-inflammatory drugs in PCME that reflect current research and practice. 000056803 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby-nc$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/es/ 000056803 590__ $$a2.581$$b2016 000056803 591__ $$aGERIATRICS & GERONTOLOGY$$b25 / 49 = 0.51$$c2016$$dQ3$$eT2 000056803 592__ $$a1.086$$b2016 000056803 593__ $$aMedicine (miscellaneous)$$c2016$$dQ1 000056803 593__ $$aGeriatrics and Gerontology$$c2016$$dQ1 000056803 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000056803 700__ $$aSikorski, B.L. 000056803 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-9876-5850$$aAscaso, F.J.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000056803 700__ $$aHuerva, V. 000056803 7102_ $$11004$$2646$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
