Here we present Influenzanet, a participatory system for the syndromic surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Europe. Through standardized online surveys, the system collects detailed profile information and self-reported symptoms volunteered by participants resident in the Influenzanet countries. Established in 2009, it now includes 10 countries representing more than half of the 28 member states of the European Union population. The experience of 7 influenza seasons illustrates how Influenzanet has become an adjunct to existing ILI surveillance networks, offering coherence across countries, inclusion of nonmedically attended ILI, flexibility in case definition, and facilitating individual-level epidemiological analyses generally not possible in standard systems. Having the sensitivity to timely detect substantial changes in population health, Influenzanet has the potential to become a viable instrument for a wide variety of applications in public health preparedness and control. 000061662 536__ $$9This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No H2020 641191-CIMPLEX$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/H2020/641191/EU/Bringing CItizens, Models and Data together in Participatory, Interactive SociaL EXploratories/CIMPLEX 000061662 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000061662 590__ $$a6.273$$b2016 000061662 591__ $$aIMMUNOLOGY$$b23 / 150 = 0.153$$c2016$$dQ1$$eT1 000061662 591__ $$aMICROBIOLOGY$$b15 / 124 = 0.121$$c2016$$dQ1$$eT1 000061662 591__ $$aINFECTIOUS DISEASES$$b7 / 84 = 0.083$$c2016$$dQ1$$eT1 000061662 592__ $$a3.931$$b2016 000061662 593__ $$aInfectious Diseases$$c2016$$dQ1 000061662 593__ $$aImmunology and Allergy$$c2016$$dQ1 000061662 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion 000061662 700__ $$aTurbelin, Clément 000061662 700__ $$aBlanchon, Thierry 000061662 700__ $$aHanslik, Thomas 000061662 700__ $$aBonmarin, Isabelle 000061662 700__ $$aLevy-Bruhl, Daniel 000061662 700__ $$aPerrotta, Daniela 000061662 700__ $$aPaolotti, Daniela 000061662 700__ $$aSmallenburg, Ronald 000061662 700__ $$aKoppeschaar, Carl 000061662 700__ $$aFranco, Ana O. 000061662 700__ $$aMexia, Ricardo 000061662 700__ $$aEdmunds, W.
