Here we introduce reinfections in the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model so to incorporate the possibility that an individual that ceases its activity (recovered) can resume it due to secondary infections from its active (infected) peers. We show that, when primary infection is less frequent than secondary ones, a typical situation in many social contagion processes, the epidemic transition turns from smooth to abrupt. As a consequence, macroscopic collective states can be triggered from the inactive (healthy) regime by a small increment of the primary contagion rate. 000063097 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/FIS2011-25167$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MINECO/FIS2012-38266-C02-01 000063097 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aAll rights reserved$$uhttp://www.europeana.eu/rights/rr-f/ 000063097 590__ $$a1.963$$b2015 000063097 591__ $$aPHYSICS, MULTIDISCIPLINARY$$b19 / 79 = 0.241$$c2015$$dQ1$$eT1 000063097 592__ $$a0.625$$b2015 000063097 593__ $$aPhysics and Astronomy (miscellaneous)$$c2015$$dQ2 000063097 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion 000063097 700__ $$aBarros, Alessandro S. de 000063097 700__ $$aPinho, Suani T.
