Partiendo de una visión general del escenario europeo en estos siglos, se hace una relación entre esta situación y lo que influyó en el auge de las actividades piráticas en dicho océano. Se esbozan sus aspectos sociales, organizativos, su origen y sus objetivos, se trata de establecer una visión de los aspectos generales del desarrollo de sus actividades y relacionar tanto su origen como su desarrollo y su declive con el momento que vivía Europa. Se hace hincapié en el papel que ejercieron las mujeres que también, al igual que sus compañeros varones, se vieron, en muchas ocasiones, obligadas a hacerse a la mar. Asimismo, uno de los objetivos de este trabajo radica en desmitificar la imagen de los piratas, tanto para bien como para mal, mostrándolos como unos hombres de su tiempo, sin ser ni los románticos amantes de la libertad de los que hablaba Espronceda, ni los violentos hombres sanguinarios que el cine y la literatura se han esforzado en mostrar. This work deals with the pirates of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, more specifically those who focused their activities in the area of the Atlantic. Starting from an overview of the European scenario in these centuries, a relationship is made between this situation and how influenced in the rise of piratical activities in that ocean. Its social, organizational, origins and objectives are outlined. It aims to establish a vision of the general aspects of the development of its activities and to relate both its origin and its development and its decline to the moment in which Europe lived. Emphasis is placed on the role played by women who, as well as their male partners, were often forced to go to sea.
