Resumen: Breve presentación de la asignatura Este curso proporciona una introducción a la relación entre las tensiones nacionales y el conflicto internacional en Europa entre el final de la Primera Guerra Mundial y el comienzo de la Segunda. La quiebra social producida por la Primera Guerra Mundial intensificó esas tensiones y conflictos. Tras la revolución rusa y el nacimiento de la Rusia Comunista, las potencias occidentales intentaron reconstruir sus sistemas políticos y económicos para prevenir el triunfo de la izquierda. El surgimiento del fascismo como una forma extrema de esa defensa frente al comunismo tuvo importantes consecuencias en la relación internacional entre estados, como las generó también la crisis económica y social de los poderes democráticos en los años treinta. El curso examina los acontecimientos más importantes del período 1914-1945, incluido el impacto de la Gran Guerra, el papel histórico de Mussolini, Hitler y Stalin, la destrucción de la democracia y la consolidación de dictaduras.

Abstract: This course provides an introduction to the relationship between national tensions and international conflict in Europe from the beginning of the First World War and the end of the Second. The social dislocation consequent upon the First World War intensified such tensions and pushed the international system to heating point. Faced by the existence of Communist Russia, the Western Powers attempted to reconstruct their political and economic systems in such a way as to build defences against the Left. The emergence of fascism as an extreme form of such defences had important consequences for the international relations between states, as did the social and economic crisis of the democratic Powers in the 1930s. The course examines the most important developments of the period 1914-1945, including the impact of the War, Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, the breakdown of democracy and the appeal of dictatorship
