El desarrollo de colecciones en bibliotecas públicas. Fundamentos teóricos

Resumen: La colección constituye un elemento fundamental de la biblioteca, por lo que el desarrollo de bases teóricas para su desarrollo es imprescindible. Los fundamentos teóricos del proceso deben adaptarse a cada tipo de biblioteca y a las modificaciones que van surgiendo durante su constante proceso evolutivo. Este artículo tiene como objetivo identificar los fundamentos teóricos del desarrollo de colecciones en la biblioteca pública, en el contexto de las colecciones híbridas e identificar de manera pormenorizada, la selección de documentos y su incorporación a las colecciones bibliotecarias. Para elaborar dichos fundamentos, los autores han analizado distintas publicaciones científicas, destacando por su importancia las Directrices ifla/unesco para el desarrollo del servicio de bibliotecas públicas. A su vez, los principios generales se han matizado con el estudio de los procesos en algunas bibliotecas públicas, a través del examen de sus sitios web, y a través de la observación directa.
The collection is an essential component of the public library. As such, development of its theoretical principles is very important. The theoretical basis of the process needs to be adapted to each library in accord with the issues that emerge during the process of the library’s evolution. This article aims to identify the theoretical basis of collection development in public libraries holding hybrid collections. To achieve such ends, the authors analyze an array of scientific publications, including most importantly the IFLA/UNESCO GeDePeLeSe. At the same time, these general principles are fleshed out with information gathered from examination of the web sites of several public libraries and through direct inspection of library facilities.
