Bellas atroces: figuras femeninas monstruosas en la Antigua Grecia

Abstract: Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo es, a través de una aproximación a las fuentes clásicas y la historiografía moderna, ofrecer una revisión y síntesis historiográfica sobre cuatro figuras femeninas monstruosas en el imaginario griego antiguo: Medusa, Esfinges, Sirenas y Harpías. Estos seres mitológicos ocupan un lugar significativo en las creencias griegas y, como especializaciones de las Keres, son demones funerarios que arrancan a las personas de la vida pero, a la vez, las conducen al Más Allá. En definitiva, son espíritus malignos que por su naturaleza híbrida y ambigua se constituyen como figuras de alteridad, y originan dos sentimientos contrapuestos de atracción y repulsión. Abstract The aim of this work is, through an approximation to classic sources and modern historiography, to offer a review and historiographic synthesis on four monstrous females figures in the Ancient Greek: Medusa, Sphinxes, Sirens and Harpies. These mythological beings occupy a significant place in greek beliefs and, as specialization of the Keres, they are funerary demons, which strip people from life but, at the same time, lead them to the Afterlife. In summary, they are evil spirits whose hybrid and ambiguous nature make themselves figures of otherness and provoke two opposite feelings of attraction and repulsion.
