Given the recent emphasis of the genre on these issues, this article proposes cosmopolitanism as a particularly useful theoretical framework for analyzing contemporary science fiction. The article focuses on the remake’s reliance on the figure of the alien and its destructive potential as a means of drawing attention to the global threat of climate change. The Day the Earth Stood Still presents cosmopolitanism as a perspective and way of acting that develops as a response to specific transnational challenges. Keywords: The Day the Earth Stood Still; science fiction; film; cosmopolitanism; alien; climate change
