Resumen: Energy plays an important role in the economic growth of countries. Companies attempt at optimising their use and acquiring best price energy sources to compete in international markets. It is the purpose of the present paper to analyse the primary and final energy sources, energy efficiency and electricity costs for Spanish companies in order to compare them to other European countries. Thus, the current situation of the most important Spanish trade partners in the EU could give insight into potential competitive advantages or disadvantages of companies in this country. Different data sources have been considered to analyse the evolution of the energy mix, energy intensities and the different components of the electricity tariff, as well as the evolution in France, Germany and the European Union in the reference period. Results point out some problems that may be detrimental to certain economic sectors and businesses.
