From the Identification and prevention of Dietary-and lifestyle induced health EFfects In Children and infantS (IDEFICS) study, and based on the data availability in each period due to drop outs, 8807 children aged 2 to 9.9 years from eight European countries at baseline (T0: 2007–2008); 5085 children after two years (T1); and 1991 after four years (T3), were included in these analyses. Dietary intake and the Diet Quality Index (DQI) were assessed by two 24 hours dietary recalls (24-HDR) and food frequency questionnaire. Consumption of milk and yogurt (p = 0.04) and cheese (p < 0.001) at snack meal occasions was associated with higher DQI scores in T0; milk and yogurt (p < 0.001), and cheese (p < 0.001) in T1; and cheese (p = 0.05) in T3. Consumers of milk (p = 0.02), yogurt (p < 0.001), or cheese (p < 0.001) throughout T0 and T1 at all snack moments had significantly higher scores of DQI compared to non-consumers. This was also observed with the consumption of cheese between T1 and T3 (p = 0.03). Consumption of dairy products at snack moments through childhood is associated with a better overall diet quality, being a good strategy to improve it in this period. 000088546 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/CIBERObn/CB15-00043$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EUR/FP6/FOOD-016181$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/FP7/266044/EU/Determinants of eating behaviour in European children, adolescents and their parents/I.FAMILY$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/Spanish Ministry of Health/RD16-0022 000088546 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000088546 590__ $$a5.717$$b2020 000088546 591__ $$aNUTRITION & DIETETICS$$b17 / 88 = 0.193$$c2020$$dQ1$$eT1 000088546 592__ $$a1.417$$b2020 000088546 593__ $$aNutrition and Dietetics$$c2020$$dQ1 000088546 593__ $$aFood Science$$c2020$$dQ1 000088546 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000088546 700__ $$aIntemann, Timm 000088546 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-6173-5850$$aDe Miguel-Etayo, Pilar 000088546 700__ $$aPala, V. 000088546 700__ $$aHebestreit, A. 000088546 700__ $$aWolters, M. 000088546 700__ $$aRusso, P. 000088546 700__ $$aVeidebaum, T. 000088546 700__ $$aPapoutsou, S. 000088546 700__ $$aNagy, P. 000088546 700__ $$aEiben, G. 000088546 700__ $$aRise, P. 000088546 700__ $$aDe Henauw, S. 000088546 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-0454-653X$$aMoreno, Luis A.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000088546 700__ $$aon behalf of the IDEFICS, /I.Family consortia 000088546 7102_ $$11006$$2255$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
