Cuando el Sindicato Nacional de Mineros (NUM) llamó a la huelga en 1984, el Área de Nottinghamshire no contestó. La importancia que el fracaso de la acción industrial en el condado de las Midlands tuvo en la caída del NUM en 1985 ha sido fuente de intenso debate, y varios autores han explorado diferentes de sus causas. Este ensayo examina las causas de la oposición a la huelga que se desarrolló en Notts y argumenta que tales causes eran, a la vez, internas y externas. Primero, las marcas de reaccionarismo dejadas en la cultura y política del Área por el sindicato amarillo de George Spencer establecen las bases de la oposición, basada en el individualismo y el productivismo. Segundo, la existencia de una ofensiva neoliberal, dirigida con meticulosidad por Thatcher y su Unidad Política, construye un ambiente ideal para la prosperidad de tal oposición. Al final, ambos frentes, interno y externo, se afectaron y apoyaron mutuamente en su intento de acabar con la huelga.
Abstract:
When the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) called for the strike action in 1984, the Nottinghamshire Area did not respond. The relevance that the failing of the industrial action in the Midlands’ county had in the NUM’s defeat of 1985 has been long debated, and many authors explore its causes. This essay analyses the causes for the development of strike opposition in Nottinghamshire and argues that such causes were both internal and external to the Area. First, the traces of reactionism left in the Area’s pit culture and politics by the yellow union of George Spencer established the ideological basis for the strike’s opposition, based on individualism and productivism. Secondly, the existence of a neoliberal offensive, meticulously conducted by Thatcher and her Policy Unit, built up a perfect environment for the thriving of such opposition. Ultimately, both fronts, internal and external, affected and supported each other in their aim to bring down the strike.
