The scope of Sennett’s thinking – encompassing everything from buildings themselves, to cities, to territories – focuses in this conversation around issues such as gentrification, tourism, urban borders and boundaries, and his desire for a more ‘tactile’ urbanism. His reflections attract the attention not only of architects but also of urban designers, sociologists, geographers and environmental engineers, addressing as they do, key themes such as the dangers of social homogenization, the forces of capitalism and the consequences of climate change. The interview clearly illustrates the shift in Sennett’s interest from urbanism per se, to the broader question of climate change and environmental sustainability.
En su estudio londinense de Shaffron Hill, Richard Sennett comparte con nosotros sus preocupaciones actuales, desde los procesos de transformación que están experimentando nuestras ciudades hasta el futuro mismo del planeta. Sennett –cuyo pensamiento abarca la escala de la arquitectura, la urbana e incluso la del territorio– se centra en esta conversación en temas como la gentrificación, el turismo, los bordes y barreras urbanas, o su anhelo por un urbanismo más ‘táctil’. Sus reflexiones resultan de interés no solo para arquitectos, sino también para urbanistas, sociólogos, geógrafos o ingenieros medioambientales, ya que abordan temas clave como el peligro que comporta la homogeneización social, el poder del capitalismo o las consecuencias del cambio climático. A lo largo de esta conversación se puede apreciar el desplazamiento en los intereses de Sennett, desde el urbanismo en sí mismo hacia cuestiones de más amplio alcance, como el cambio climático o la sostenibilidad ambiental.
