Abstract: Resumen: Este trabajo ofrece una aproximación a la visión que se ha tenido sobre Carlos II y su reinado desde finales del siglo XVII hasta la actualidad. Hace un recorrido que empieza con los propios contemporáneos del rey, tanto extranjeros como naturales, que forjaron una imagen de decadencia que se explota en el siglo siguiente con la llegada de los Borbones al trono y tiene su punto álgido con la historiografía isabelina en el siglo XIX. Esa visión pesimista dominó la historiografía tradicional hasta la llegada de nuevos estudios en década de los 80 del siglo XX que arrojaron luz sobre un periodo que no había suscitado gran interés. Estos nuevos estudios vinieron a matizar la decadencia y crisis del siglo XVII, y visualizaron una recuperación durante el reinado de Carlos II que sería visible ya con el cambio de dinastía. Asimismo, para comprender el origen de la imagen decadente hay que considerar el contexto en el que se comenzó a formular, por lo que este trabajo analiza los intereses que hay a la hora de analizar la figura de Carlos II y su reinado.
Abstract: This paper offers an approximation to the image of Charles II throughout history. It makes a journey that begins with the king’s contemporaries who forged an image of decadence that was exploited in the following century with the arrival of the Bourbons to the throne and reached its peak with Elizabethan historiography in the 19th century. This pessimistic view has dominated tradicional historiography until the arrival of the new studies in the 1980s that shed light on this historical period. These new studies clarified the decadence and crisis of the 17th century and visualized a recovery during Charles II’s reign. Likewise, to understand the origin of the decadent image, it is necessary to consider the context in which it began to be formulated, so this work analyzes the interests that lay under the studies of the figure of Charles II and his reign.
