Its central message, however, is surprising: instead of encouraging the clearest possible specification of the object of study in research on language evolution, that is, a specification of what evolves when we say that language evolved, the authors argue that the lack of agreement on what language is has served to facilitate the significant progress made in research on language evolution over the last decade...
