Abstract: Methanol can be obtained by CO2 hydrogenation in a membrane reactor with higher yield or lower pressure than in a conventional packed bed reactor. This work explores a new kind of membrane with the potential to be suitable for such membrane reactor. Silicone-ceramic composite membranes and Nafion® have been synthesized and characterised towards the capability to selectively remove H2O from a mixture containing H2, CO2 and H2O at adecuate temperatures for methanol synthesis. We have found that silicone membranes can provide selective permeation of H2O under such harsh conditions, and thus is an alternative candidate for its use in membrane reactors for this process.
