Sinergias en morfología y genética de Microtus s.l. del Cuaternario de la Península Ibérica
Resumen: The genera and subgenera of Microtus s.l. (Arvicolinae, Rodentia) have been widely used to infer Quaternary biostratigraphic chronology due to their high evolutionary rate and distribution. Despite the remarkable amount of bibliography, some controversy still exists regarding the systematics of some taxa, and their phylogenetic relationships remain unsolved even using extensive molecular datasets. In this paper we perform a preliminary study combining morphological (17 tooth characters) and genetic (mitochondrial cytb sequences) characters of these taxa from the early Holocene of the Iberian Peninsula. Obtained data suggests that the introduction of molecular data to the morphological character dataset increases the support level of nodes of phylogenetic trees, although some of the relationships between different taxa are not fully resolved. Thus, this first combined approach suggests that more morphological and molecular data should be included in datasets, as well as more data from extinct taxa, to unravel the complex phylogeny of this animal group.
