Evaluation method of modular products for the prosumer. proposal and improvement
Resumen: The increased interest of end users in designing and manufacturing their own products poses the evolution of modular design in a different perspective. It is proposed and developed a new evaluation method of modular products for the prosumers, users who produce part of what they consume. The objective is to assess products in the conceptual phases of design to achieve characteristics that improve their level of modularity and their adaptation to the end user. The method is presented as a checklist proposal that evaluates a total of nine characteristics through five evaluation levels. Each characteristic is posed as a question and each level as an answer, which makes the method more understandable for non-specialized users. To test it and apply a series of improvements, the method proposed is applied by three evaluators on 35 products from different market sectors. Although the method is aimed at the conceptual phases of design, its application in the optimization and development of existing products is not excluded. Therefore, the 35 products evaluated correspond to both design concepts and marketed products. As a result, the work presents an improved proposal of the method that will be applied with external evaluators in a later development phase. The evaluation of the products also offer conclusions about which are the most consensual product typologies, what restrictions have been found in the application of the method and how to approach design and evaluation methods to users who are not specialized in design.
