Laponite is a nanostructured synthetic clay with the capacity to retain and progressively release drugs. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in Laponite application in various biomedical areas. This is the first paper to review the potential biomedical applications of Laponite in ophthalmology. The introduction briefly covers the physical, chemical, rheological, and biocompatibility features of different routes of administration. After that, emphasis is placed on 1) drug delivery for antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, growth factors, other proteins, and cancer treatment; 2) bleeding prevention or treatment; and 3) tissue engineering through regenerative medicine using scaffolds in intraocular and extraocular tissue. Although most scientific research is not performed on the eye, both the findings and the new treatments resulting from that research are potentially applicable in ophthalmology since many of the drugs used are the same, the tissue evaluated in vitro or in vivo is also present in the eye, and the pathologies treated also occur in the eye. Finally, future prospects for this emerging field are discussed. 000132290 536__ $$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/PID2020-113281RB-C22$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/PID2020-113281RB-C21$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/MAT2017-83858-C2-2$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/MICINN/MAT2017-83858-C2-1$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/ISCIII/PI20-00437$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/ISCIII/PI17-01946$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/ISCIII/PI17-01726$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/ISCIII/M17-00213$$9info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/ES/ISCIII/JR22-00057 000132290 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000132290 590__ $$a8.7$$b2023 000132290 592__ $$a1.518$$b2023 000132290 591__ $$aMATERIALS SCIENCE, BIOMATERIALS$$b6 / 53 = 0.113$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000132290 593__ $$aBioengineering$$c2023$$dQ1 000132290 591__ $$aENGINEERING, BIOMEDICAL$$b11 / 123 = 0.089$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000132290 593__ $$aBiomaterials$$c2023$$dQ1 000132290 593__ $$aMolecular Biology$$c2023$$dQ1 000132290 593__ $$aBiotechnology$$c2023$$dQ1 000132290 593__ $$aBiomedical Engineering$$c2023$$dQ1 000132290 593__ $$aCell Biology$$c2023$$dQ2 000132290 594__ $$a8.3$$b2023 000132290 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000132290 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-7914-4685$$aCardiel, María J.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000132290 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0002-0136-5138$$aFraile, José M. 000132290 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-1570-4257$$aMayoral, José A.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000132290 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0003-2389-8282$$aPablo, Luis E.$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000132290 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-6258-2489$$aGarcía-Martin, Elena$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000132290 7102_ $$12013$$2765$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
