Systematic literature reviews have not yet considered this impact. The Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, PsychINFO, ERIC and MEDLINE databases were searched for relevant literature (2000–2022) pertaining to adolescents aged 12–18 years in secondary schools. Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria, including thirteen interventions, five cross-sectional and two longitudinal studies. Included studies contributed 108 reported effects, that examined depression, anxiety, self-esteem, self-efficacy, wellbeing, life satisfaction and positive mental health. Anxiety was the most frequently reported outcome, with 59% of the reported findings found to be non-significant, 24% significantly positive, 12% significantly negative and 6% reporting a negative trend but with no test of significance. Evidence supported the impact of physical education on adolescent mental health and wellbeing. Significantly positive effects were linked to interventions with minor modifications to typical provision such as the integration of teacher workshops and/or implementation of curriculum models. This suggests the importance of supplementing typical school provision of physical education to positively influence future impact. 000135792 540__ $$9info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess$$aby$$uhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/es/ 000135792 590__ $$a4.7$$b2023 000135792 592__ $$a2.229$$b2023 000135792 591__ $$aSOCIAL SCIENCES, INTERDISCIPLINARY$$b5 / 267 = 0.019$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000135792 593__ $$aDevelopmental and Educational Psychology$$c2023$$dQ1 000135792 591__ $$aPSYCHOLOGY, DEVELOPMENTAL$$b11 / 91 = 0.121$$c2023$$dQ1$$eT1 000135792 593__ $$aSocial Sciences (miscellaneous)$$c2023$$dQ1 000135792 593__ $$aPsychiatry and Mental Health$$c2023$$dQ1 000135792 593__ $$aPediatrics, Perinatology and Child Health$$c2023$$dQ1 000135792 594__ $$a10.4$$b2023 000135792 655_4 $$ainfo:eu-repo/semantics/article$$vinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion 000135792 700__ $$aAdamakis, Manolis 000135792 700__ $$aO’Keeffe, Brendan T. 000135792 700__ $$aWalsh, Liam 000135792 700__ $$aBannon, Aine 000135792 700__ $$0(orcid)0000-0001-8115-0649$$aGarcia-Gonzalez, Luis$$uUniversidad de Zaragoza 000135792 700__ $$aChambers, Fiona 000135792 700__ $$aStylianou, Michalis 000135792 700__ $$aSherwin, Ian 000135792 700__ $$aMannix-McNamara, Patricia 000135792 700__ $$aMacDonncha, Ciaran 000135792 7102_ $$13001$$2187$$aUniversidad de Zaragoza$$bDpto.
