Betraying the Polis and the Gods. (Ir)religious Persuasion in Lycurgus, Against Leocrates
Resumen: This paper aims to study the (ir)religious discourse that Lycurgus intertwines within the charge of treason against his opponent, Leocrates. I intend to demonstrate how the speaker manipulates (ir)religious notions to depict his rival as a threat to civic welfare. Furthermore, I explore several connections between rhetoric and (ir)religiosity. These links not only contribute to enhancing the orator’s message and buttress his line of argumentation but also stir profound emotional responses in the audience.
