Preventive conservation and sustainability of heritage collections in transit

Resumen: This paper aims to present the complexity of the preventive conservation and sustainability of the collections that are included in the temporary exhibition ‘Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away’, opened in Madrid in December 2017 and scheduled to travel to new destinations over the next 7 years. It was produced in co-operation with the State Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland. The exhibit objects belong to more than twenty international collections concerned with the Heritage of the Holocaust. The methodology to analyze the sustainability of a traveling exhibition has been introduced, in the stage of the preparation, production, assembly, operation, disassembly, and transportation to the next venue, in order to take into consideration the whole Life Cycle of the exhibition. The indicators to consider its impact in the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social has been proposed.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar la complejidad de la conservación preventiva y la sostenibilidad de las colecciones que se incluyen en la exposición temporal "Auschwitz", inaugurada en Madrid en diciembre de 2017 y programada para viajar a nuevos destinos durante los próximos 7 años. Fue producida en cooperación con el Museo Estatal de Auschwitz-Birkenau, Polonia. Los objetos expuestos pertenecen a más de veinte colecciones internacionales relacionadas con el Patrimonio del Holocausto. Se ha introducido la metodología para analizar la sostenibilidad de una exposición itinerante, en la etapa de preparación, producción, montaje, operación, desmontaje y transporte al siguiente recinto, con el fin de tomar en consideración todo el Ciclo de Vida de la exposición. Se han propuesto los indicadores para considerar su impacto en las tres dimensiones de la sostenibilidad: ambiental, económica y social.
