Prevalence of fecal carriage of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in hospitalized and ambulatory patients during two non-outbreak periods
Resumen: Beta-lactam resistance in Enterobacteriaceae associated with plasmid-mediated extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) has become a worldwide problem. ESBLs were initially associated with nosocomial outbreaks caused by strains producing single enzymes, but recent studies have revealed a more complex situation, with a significant increase among community isolates. The rate of fecal carriage of ESBL-producing bacterial isolates in nosocomial outbreaks has been studied previously, but few prospective studies investigating the prevalence of fecal carriage during non-outbreak periods have been conducted. In an effort to fill this knowledge gap, we performed a study of hospitalized patients and outpatients to determine the prevalence of fecal carriage of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in stool samples submitted to our laboratory for culture during two non-outbreak periods separated by 17 months (April 2002–February 2003 and August 2004–July 2005)...
