La experiencia espacial en las riḥla-s de Ibn Ḫaldūn y ʿOmar Paṭōn: un estudio comparativo e interlingüístico a través de los verbos de movimiento

Resumen: This paper analyzes the genre of travel accounts in the Arabic and Islamic tradition, known as ribla, from a crosslinguistic perspective and focusing on the expression of the authorial voice. To this end, it takes the notion of "motion events" developed in Cognitive Linguistics and, by means of this notion, it studies the language employed in two ribla-s to express first-person spatial experience. Thus, through the corpus conformed by the accounts of the North African thinker Ibn Haldun (14th century) and the Castilian Mudejar 'Omar Paton (15th century), it delves into the characterization of motion verbs in Classical Arabic andAljamiado Castilian. The study shows how the consideration of the different semantic components of these verbs in a genre such as the ribla enables a structured comparison between different works. This contrastive exercise sheds light on the particularities of the authorial voices in their expression of motion and their relationship with the languages in use. Finally, these motion actions are complemented by other aspects of the linguistic codification of self-expression which, placed in relation to the works and their contexts, end up remarking the vertebral quality of the first-person voice in the definition of the literary genre of travel accounts and in the traceability of its evolution.
