La usurpación de Procopio en el relato de Amiano: Los ritos de investidura y su parodia como herramienta de interpretación

Resumen: RESUMEN: Cuando el usurpador Procopio fue investido con la púrpura en el año 365 d.C. en Constantinopla, los emperadores Valente y Valentiniano se vieron obligados a enfrentarse a una de las más peligrosas amenazas para su recién obtenido gobierno sobre el Imperio Romano de Oriente. Amiano Marcelino, quien ofrece un extenso relato de los acontecimientos, describe con detalle los ritos por los cuales estos tres purpurati accedieron al trono. Comparando ambas narrativas, este artículo pretende analizar el papel de los ritos de investidura en el Imperio Romano Tardío como herramientas de comunicación y legitimación. Los colores, materiales, actuaciones y discursos se revelan así no casuales sino cargados de intención, expresándose en términos de ideología y propaganda, resaltando la importancia de los ritos del poder.
ABSTRACT: When the usurper Procopius was invested in purple at Constantinople in 365 BC, emperors Valens and Valentinian were forced to confront one of the first and most dangerous threat to their recently obtained rule in the Eastern Roman Empire. Ammianus Marcellinus, who offers an extensive account of the events, describes in detail the rituals by which these purpurati accessed to the throne. By comparing both narratives, this paper aims to discuss the role of the rites of investiture in the Late Roman Empire as communication and legitimation tools. Colours, materials, performance and discourses reveals to be not casual but purposeful, as far as ideology and propaganda are concerned, highlighting the relevance of the rituals of power.
