"Constitución mixta" en la república de Florencia a principios del siglo XVI

Resumen: En la tradición occidental ha predominado una única interpretación de la constitución mixta, la que aplicó Polibio a Esparta y a Roma. Sin embargo, en el pensamiento político griego existieron versiones anteriores y menos rígidas de esa idea de mezclar principios o instituciones de diversas ordenaciones políticas; especialmente las de Platón y Aristóteles. Los teóricos florentinos del siglo XVI, que analizamos en este trabajo, escribieron cuando acababa de aparecer la traducción latina del libro VI del historiador aqueo. Maquiavelo, Guicciardini o Giannotti escribieron motivados por el interés de preservar la república ante la amenaza de la "tiranía" y, con ese objetivo, no se limitaron a aplicar la idea polibiana de constitución mixta, sino que también se sirvieron de las soluciones teóricas de los pensadores griegos del final del clasicismo.

A single and specific interpretation of the mixed constitution, which Polybius applied to Sparta and Rome, has prevailed in the western tradition. However, before Polybius, Greek political thought produced previous and less rigid versions of the idea of mixing principles or institutions from different political constitutions, especially those of Plato and Aristotle. Sixteenth-century Florentine theoreticians, whom I analyse in this article, wrote shortly after the publication of the Latin translation of Polybius'' Book VI. The writings of Machiavelli, Guicciardini, or Giannotti were motivated by their interests in preserving the republic against the threat of "tyranny". With this objective in mind, they did not just apply the Polybian idea of mixed constitution, but they also made use of the theoretical solutions provided by the Greek thinkers of the late Classical period.
