Los ojos de I'Toi. El telescopio solar de Kitt Peak (Arizona)

Resumen: Antes de que la observación del universo saltase al espacio para liberarse de la gravedad y de la contaminación lumínica de la superficie terrestre, hubo un rápido y notable desarrollo de esta ciencia durante el siglo XX. Esta evolución pasó por el crecimiento y la afinación de los instrumentos de observación, así como por la detección de lugares que reunieran especiales condiciones de visión y transparencia atmosférica. A este proceso no resultó ajena la participación de ingenieros y arquitectos que contribuyeron a la construcción de originales instalaciones cuya configuración incluía una redefinición del perfil del suelo –la línea de tierra– donde se asentaban. En esta carrera, ocupa un lugar destacado el Observatorio Nacional de Kitt Peak en Arizona, cuya primera instalación –el mayor telescopio solar construido nunca– fue proyectada por el ingeniero civil y arquitecto Myron Goldsmith. La atención a su trayectoria personal servirá para entender el resultado de este conjunto que media entre lo profundo de la tierra y el firmamento de las estrellas.

In the 20th century, before the observation of the universe jumped to the space to break free of gravity and light pollution on the Earth, there was a swift and notable advancement of this science. This process encompassed the development and refining of observation instruments and also the identification of sites that met seeing and transparency conditions. Both architects and engineers were involved in the project and helped to build original facilities structured to redefine the ground profile–groundline–that supported them. Kitt Peak National Observatory, in Arizona, holds a privileged position; its first installation, the largest solar telescope ever built, was designed by the civil engineer and architect Myron Goldsmith. The review of his personal trajectory will help to understand the result of this ensemble that mediates between the depths of the Earth and the firmament of the stars.
